Today I'm offering a book written by A.T. Luey and H.P. Bruvold who served on the U.S.S. Minneapolis during WWII titled The “Minnie” or The War Cruise of The U.S.S. Minneapolis. Together they present details and exploits of one of the most decorated New Orleans Class Heavy Cruisers of WWII, The U.S.S. Minneapolis (C-36). The Minneapolis was a major force in the Pacific during WWII and was one of only three ships with 17 Battle Stars awarded by the end of WWII. The book is dedicated to the brave men who lost their lives while serving on board the U.S.S. Minneapolis.
The book was copyrighted in 1946 and privately printed by the Bell Printing Company of Elkhart, Indiana. It has 126 pages that detail her battles in the Pacific, the Battle Ribbons she was awarded, The chronological outline of all her operations from December 7th, 1941, through October 14th, 1945, along with a two page map showing the War Cruise of The Mighty Cruiser.
There's a ship's roster of its officers and crew members which lists the officers of the ship's company, Admirals and their staffs, men who were on board after October 1945 and men who were detached from the ship prior to October 1945. There is also a complete list of the ship's roster on the last 22 pages of the book listing the servicemen in alphabetical order along with their street address and the state they were from. The book has 16 black and white photos showing the crew as they and the ship battle in the Pacific.

The first blank inside page has been removed(I’m thinking it was removed because there was writing in ink on it). The rest of the inside pages are in very good condition, very clean and bright.
**Below is a little history of the U.S.S. Minneapolis you may find quite interesting:
She was launched on September 6, 1933, and commissioned on May 19, 1934, with Captain Gordon W. Haines in Command. She was decommissioned on February 10, 1947, and scrapped on August 14, 1959. Called a ship of destiny, while the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor she was at sea doing gunnery practice or she may have been destroyed. After receiving her orders she spent 21 months cruising the Pacific covering a distance equivalent to nearly steaming seven times around the world. During the 21 months she spent at sea the crew were in port for a whole 8 days.
Her missions were highly classified so her famous exploits and the number of times the Japanese tried to sink her were never made public until after the war was over. She fought in the Battle of The Coral Sea--At Midway--Battle of Tassafaronga--Battle of Philippine Sea--at Guam--The Surigao Strait-- Wake Island--The Gilbert Islands--Supported Landing on Guadalcanal and Tulagi--Helped to tow the Saratoga to safety after being struck by Japanese torpedo's--When the Lexington was sinking after being hit by Japanese torpedo's she rescued survivors before the Lexington sank.
On Thursday evening November 30, 1942, the Battle of Tassafaronga raged on against the Japan Imperial Navy under the command of rear Admiral Raizo Tanka. During the battle the Minneapolis was hit by two torpedoes in quick succession and was left dead in the water. After 9 months of repairs she was sent back to the Pacific and fought in every major battle against the Japanese Navy and suicide Kamikaze air attacks.
Her guns were fired so many thousands of times that she was sent to Bremerton to have the linings of her gun barrels replaced before steaming back for more action in the Philippines.
If your dad or a grandparent served on the Minneapolis during WWII they may like reading this book to see how accurate Luey and Bruvold's story really is. A wonderful book to add to your collection of WWII memorabilia. God Bless The Greatest Generation and God Bless Our Vets!!!
