Pictured for sale are 13 pieces of memorabilia from one of the most famous department stores America has ever known, the one and only Hess's Department Store, which was located in downtown Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The first items are 12 Chrome Postcards from 1960 which feature pictures from Hess's World Famous Flower Show. Also for sale is a Buster Brown Comic Book from 1946 which has "Smilin Ed McConnell", the host of Buster Brown Radio Gang during the 1940’s shown shopping for shoes at Hess's with his friends Midnight, Froggy, and Squeeky. Listed below is a description of each postcard and the comic book:
*Postcards: All 12 scenes are from Hess's International Flower Show and are in near mint condition. On the back of each postcard is a description of the flower display and the country it represents.

7."Oriental Pageantry"---8."Magic Majorca"---9."Caribbean Fantasy"---10."Sunlit Jamaica"---Cards 11. and 12. show colorful pictures of the shoe and handbag section of the store along with pictures of the huge 6 foot tall chandeliers that were found throughout the store.
All postcards have not been postmarked.
The last item is a Buster Brown comic book. Department stores all across the country that sold Buster Brown shoes would contact the company to have its store name and address put on the front of the their comic book. When parents purchased Buster Brown shoes they would receive a free comic book. In this comic it has “Smilin Ed” trying to corral his friends from causing all kinds chaos on every floor of Hess's. Also there are two other stories one called "Mine Pony' and "The Eagle's Nest".
**Condition of comic: The front and back covers are in good condition and the inside pages are in good condition. *Covers: The cover has creases, edge wear, corner bumps and light stains on the back cover. *Inside pages: The inside pages have some stains along the edges and corner chips otherwise the pages are clean and bright.
From the huge revolving doors, stunning chandeliers, the talking elevators, the massive amounts of Christmas decorations found on all five floors, carolers that entertained customers, the magnificent toy department, to all the famous stars that appeared at the store, Hess’s was a fantastic store. There were also beautiful models parading through the store showing off the latest fashions, the bargain basement sales, and every special holiday sales events that brought thousands of customers lining the streets of Allentown, PA, waiting for the doors to open.
The first opportunity to purchase pure gold over the counter in the United States happened in Hess's in 1974 along with the introduction of Rudi Gemreich's topless bathing suit. And who could resist the renowned and famous Patio Restaurant with its waitresses dressed in Hess’s uniforms serving up their mile high strawberry pies and sundaes, which were said to die for.
From the 1940’s through the 1960’s dozens of famous TV and movie stars made it a point to visit Hess’s to shop and promote their show or new movie that they were appearing in. These are a few of the stars that visited Hess's: Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Johnny Carson, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Barbara Walters, Burt Ward, Gina Lolabrigida, Rock Hudson, George(Superman) Reeves, Rosalyn Carter, Jimmy Carter, Hubert Humphrey, Hopalong Cassidy, Barbara (Genie) Eden, Dan(Hoss Cartwight) Blocker, James (Maverick)Garner and Liberace. Many other stars that performed at The Greater Allentown Fair most always ended up shopping at Hess's Department Store.
If you lived in Pennsylvania or traveled from other states to shop at Hess's during its glory years, you will once again love seeing the store one more time as you view each postcard and read this rare Buster Brown Comic Book.
