Nine Post WWII Servicemen's Apartment Photos
After the end of WWII, servicemen and women came home in search of a home or apartment to call their own. Unfortunately there was a major housing shortage and they had slim pickings until the housing boom of the 1950's. Today I'm giving you a glimpse of the inside of an apartment in 1950 that a serviceman and his family were renting. The apartment is somewhere in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, in 1950. The person I bought the photos from said his parents lived there until the end of 1955 when they finally moved out and bought a home of their own.
There are 9 black and white photos that will tell a story about a family growing up and becoming a part of the Baby Boomer Generation. All the photos measure 8" x 10". Below is a small description and the condition of each photo:
*Please note that the glare marks on some of the photos are from the scanner. Only the glare marks mentioned with the photos below are the ones that are on the photos themselves.
1.)The first photo shows their cozy living room which his wife has knitted items for on the chairs and sofa, a rocking chair in between two radiators to keep warm while listening to the radio in the evening and tucked away in one corner of their couch is his U.S. Navy pillow from the PX on the base where he was stationed. **Condition: Very good condition; There is a very tiny crease mark at the bottom left and top right corners.
2/3.)The next two photos show the inside of their kitchen and all the wonderful 1950's appliances and furniture. A simple kitchen with a radio, toaster, refrigerator, tea or coffee pot on the table, a red electric clock hanging on the wall, the fly swatter hanging on the wall, and a wonderful vintage range, and kitchen sink. The kitchen reminds me of the movie "The Christmas Story", "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out". **Condition: 2.)Good condition; There is a glare mark near the top edge and top right corner of the photo. 3.)Very Good condition.
4/5.)The next two pictures are of storage room showing items the husband and wife used daily. A lunch bucket and thermos, brooms, a rug beater, work gloves, tin cups, hand held grass clippers, his jackets, a roll up desk, baskets maybe to put cloths spins in and other neat items. Nothing fancy--only the basic everyday items needed to get by on in the 1950's. **Condition: 4.)Very Good condition. 5.)Very good condition; There is a small round glare mark at the top left corner and a tiny crease mark at the bottom left corner.
6/7.)The next two photos show what the classic 1950's bathroom looked like--the cast iron tub, towel racks hanging from the wall, the family scale, the hopper with a wooden toilet seat, waste paper basket, cast iron sink, and metal linen closet. **Condition: 6.)Very good condition; There is a tiny crease mark at the bottom left corner. 7.)Very good condition; There is a very tiny crease mark at the bottom left and right corners and the top right corner.
8.)Another photo shows only a part of the bedroom and a look at a small part of a piano in another room. **Condition: Very Good condition; There is a small glare mark near the center of the photo.
9.)Another shows a child's bedroom or play room with the kids' toys and a peek through a door into the bathroom. **Condition: Very good condition.
If you grew up in the 1950's and early 1960's everyone's apartment or home had the many of the same items found in these pictures. A wonderful and simple time where family values meant everything and parents never had to be afraid to let their kids walk home from school or from a high school football game at night. How times have changed.
A great group of photos that reflect the life style of the 1950's and how little hard-working Americans needed after the end of WWII as they raised their family and looked forward to the future.
A great gift to give a parent or grandparent that grew up in the 1950's - 1960's; a very special gift they'll cherish forever and love to show their friends.
