Ashworth Ironstone Armorial Plate - Radcliffe

Ironstone armorial dinner plate by G.L Ashworth & Brothers, c. 1870 – 1880.

The molded border is navy blue with elaborate gilt scrolls and colorful flowers and insets.

The cavetto is of gilt diaper patterns interrupted by burnt orange insets.

The center contains the crest and the motto “Virtus Propter Se” of the Radcliffe family.

The reverse has a printed Royal coat of arms over the words “Ironstone China” and the impressed words “Real Ironstone China”.

Although the name “Ashworth” is missing from the above marks, a plate with the same border is pictured in the Ashworth’s discussion in “Godden’s Guide to Ironstone Stone & Granite Wares” at page 187, plate 146, and other plates with this border have been found with the Ashworth name printed or impressed on the reverse.

Given the date of the plate, it was probably made for Sir Joseph Percival Pickford Radcliffe, 3rd Baronet of Milnsbridge House (1824–1908), although it is possible that it was made for his father, Sir Joseph Radcliffe, 2nd Baronet (1799–1872).

In September 1813, their ancestor, Joseph Radcliffe, was awarded a Baronetage for his part in quelling the Luddite disturbances.

In excellent condition consistent with age and usage.

Dimensions: Approximately 10 ¼” diameter.
