Beautiful antique French tapestry dating to 1890. Depicts and man and a woman interacting with a child plus a couple of other children in the distance. At the top is The phrase “Le fils sage fait la joie de sea Parents,” which translates to “The wise son is the joy of his parents.” At the bottom, is the phrase “C’est un vaurien,” which translates to “He’s a rascal.” At the bottom right is “A - MdlP - 1890.”
The piece is attached to a wooden frame. The piece Is in good condition but shows some wear consistent with a tapestry of this age. These include some sagging at the bottom center, some minor stretching in a couple of spots around the edge, and wear in the border plus a missing ~4” border segment.
This piece has hung beautifully in our family home for years and is always a piece of interest and conversation among friends. We have lots of fun interpreting the meaning of the piece.
The piece is large, measuring 29” tall x 34” wide x 1” deep.
