This incredible pair of 19th Century tapestries were made by D’Apres Francesco Vinea, a French artist (1845-1902). Each depicts a fanciful scene of celebration from French life. One is a scene from a pub or wine cellar where a painter is painting a picture of a young woman while a musician and another man look on while other men sit talking at a table to the right. The other is a scene from the same setting with the same characters singing and celebrating.
These pieces are very large with each 41.25” tall x 1.5” deep. One piece is very slightly wider than the other — specifically, the pierce in which the painter is painting is 63.5” wide, while the piece with the musician playing is 62.75” wide, so a difference of 0.75”. These tapestries were the focal point of a wall in a key room in our family’s house for decades, and the difference in the width was imperceptible and was only noticed when actually measuring the pieces to create this listing. The pieces are ready to hang.
The tapestries are in excellent condition for their age. There are no tears or stains in the fabric, just a few minor pulls in the fabric which are very hard to detect and are not visible at a normal viewing angle. The colors are faded as one would expect given the age giving the piece an overall golden or mustard tone with muted colors coming through (e.g., the woman’s dress, the musician’s coat).
The frames are of a simple wooden design, keeping the observer’s focus on the tapestries. There are some scratches and worn spots on the frames which could be easily fixed with some cleaning and touch-up staining. See the pictures for examples of this wear.
These are being sold as a pair and will be shipped together. The shipping cost is a flat $200 via UPS Ground, reflecting the “large package” charge required to ship something of such large dimensions. Alternatively, the pieces may be picked up at our location in Dallas, Texas, at no charge.
