14" Early carved wooden head doll with original cloth body.
Carved wooden head with solid dome, painted brown hair under original wig and cap, painted brown eyes with outlined eyeliner, closed mouth, stern expression, muslin and polished cotton body with shapely waist, stitch-jointing at hips and knees, interesting hand-made early brown leather boots, She wears a cotton dress and apron with a cap. Excellent condition. Early 1800s.
I found this doll fascinating but cannot definitely state her origin. Unfortunately she came to me without provenance. Wherever she was made she is an excellent example of early wooden hand carved dolls. I had the opportunity while at the UFDC convention in July to show her to a number of experts in these early wooden dolls. The consensus was that she is American and an excellent example of these early dolls. When attributing these early dolls this is sometimes the best we can do regarding origin.
