20% OFF Vintage collectible American Legion medal school award from the 1950-60s still in excellent like new condition. This medal is pre-1963 because starting in 1963 the medal included Patriotism as one of the qualifications for receiving this award. The American Legion school award began as a yearly prize given to male graduating from eight grade. The first award started in 1926. On the reverse of Joseph Renier's medal, the lamp of wisdom rests upon an open book. The five pointed star below represents the qualities listed around the perimeter of the image.This star also symbolizes the five branches of the military that appear on the obverse:a sailor, an aviator, and three soldiers evoke not only the organization sponsoring the award, but also the ideal career of the student who receives it. The qualifications are:Courage, leadership, honor, service, scholarship, and Patriotism. This medal does not have the last qualification listed on it because it is before 1963. The Medal is made of Bronze and is 2 1/2" in diameter.
