This is a beautiful framed ceramic plaque of the Madonna and Child, sitting on a throne/chair that is decorated with two carved animals. The plaque has a glossy finish and is hand-painted, primarily in colors of yellow, brown, gold, blue, and dusty rose. Bronze metallic paint surrounds the two human figures. (The throne/chair and the halo around the head of Mary are painted yellow, which contrasts with the bronze paint, but the yellow color was hard to capture in the images.) When I purchased this item in the 1980s, the style and poor condition of the frame that it was in suggested that it was made/framed in the early part or middle part of the 20th Century (and was at least 30 years old), as the seller indicated that it was. The elongated face and hands on Mary give this plaque a modern look and are reminiscent the style that was used by Modigliano, the early 20th century French painter and sculptor. I replaced the original frame with this ornate carved wood frame that I had made by a frame-maker in Lambertville, New Jersey. This newer frame has the shape of a church window. The frame is thick and is painted with the same colors that are in the plaque, with an emphasis on the blue color of the Virgin Mary’s robe. At the time that I removed the plaque from its old frame, I noted the the plaque is also thick and heavy.

This framed plaque is about 14 3/4 inches (wide) by 22 1/2 inches (high) by 2 inches (deep) and weighs 11 pounds. It has been professionally wired, for hanging on a wall.

The plaque is in good condition, with no chips or cracks. There are some dark areas on the paint (throughout the plaque), which only add to the vintage charm of this piece. The carved frame is also in good condition. The front of the frame has some extremely minor scratches that you have to look hard (and closely) to find. There is an extremely small nick/chip, on the back of the frame (only). It is near the bottom left corner.
