This is an original oil painting of a church and courtyard, by Pal Paulovits. The painted details on this beautiful artwork are so fine that you can even see (with magnification) the tiny numbers on the clock in the church’s tower. The painting is signed “P. Paulovits, Bucuresti, 22/11 1902”, in the lower left corner. Paulovits was born in Hungary, in 1892, and was (for many years) a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He would have been very young when this painting was made. This is consistent with the painting’s somewhat naïve quality. The signature has not been professionally authenticated. I have compared it to signatures that I have seen (over the years) on other Pal Paulovits paintings and etchings, online and in galleries, and (on this basis) it appears to be authentic.
The painting is on a board and the German inscription on the back reads “Zu Andenken an mein freund Wilhem Mader”. The English translation is “In memory of my friend Wilhem Mader”.
This painting is in very good condition, with a few extremely minor flakes/scratches on the paint. It needs cleaning. There are also minor scratches on the frame, which is not original to the artwork. I added this frame, because it works well with this piece. The painting is loose in the frame.
The approximate size of the painting is 10 3/4 inches (wide) by 8 7/8 inches (high).
