Up for Sale is a stunning Painting of USS Agawam, 1921
Signed J. McCarthy and dated
There are quite a few J McCarthy artists listed, one of whom is Justin [1891-1972] but whose works are rather naive and I do not think this is by him. I think this is by an unlisted artist who might have been in the navy or did this from a photograph of the vessel, as it is accurate in terms of metal if not so skilled as placing the ship in the water.
This is not the first Agawam which was a double sided paddle steamer of the Civil War era.
Very appealing to those interested in US naval maritime history or American History.
Presented in a wooden frame.
Frame measures 17” W x 13” H x 1.75” D
Sight measures 13.25” W x 9” H
Very good condition

The USS Agawam (1863) was a double-ended, side-wheel gunboat of the United States Navy that served during the American Civil War. She measured 974 tons, with powerful rifled guns and a very fast speed of 11 kn (13 mph; 20 km/h). She served the Union Navy in the Union blockade of the rivers and other waterways of the Confederate States of America.
