Late 19th century, American. This large charcoal political cartoon depicts an apparently unhappy Uncle Sam examining the armament industry. The title is “A Belated Inspection” and the image depicts Uncle Sam with a brush in hand viewing down the bore of a cannon. It is signed lower right and appears to be “To Joe Parrish, Compliments of Jno Cassl”. The abbreviation we assume is for the political cartoonist Jonathan Cassell. Housed in a triple matted red, white and blue matte within a simple molded frame under glass. SIZE: Image: 12-1/2” x 12-1/2”. Overall: 22-1/2” x 22-1/2”. CONDITION: With light staining overall, much of the right side and upper corner of the image shows the worst of the staining. Otherwise fair to good.
