Here is a rare and stunning couple made in the early 1940s. My research has revealed that they are Black Sambo and his friend Miranda and not just any old rag doll...there was a pattern for them put out by McCalls (#1068) in the early 40s and the elderly lady I bought these from stated that they were made for her by her mother back then. They are both about 18" tall and are wearing coordinating outfits of red, white, blue and yellow floral feedsack fabric. Miranda is wearing a matching cloth bow in her hair and white cloth bloomers and a slip under her dress. Sambo has a spiffy striped shirt with calico looking buttons on his overalls and shirt. Both dolls have green and black cloth legs and brown fabric bodies, black yarn hair, felt eyes and big red felt lips. Some facial features are also highlighted with stitching. Some expected fading to outfits and faint age marks or other marks may be found but in my opinion only add to their charm and character...after all, these were once loved, cuddled and carted around by little hands.. There is wear seen on the black fabric feet of both dolls (mostly pin type holes) which could benefit from a few stitches if so desired. A great find and special addition to a collection of rag dolls, black dolls or handmade toys of yesteryear!!
