Celebrating 25 years of Antiquing Bliss
Antique Firebag or Fire Salvage Bag with Horses Belonged to Jacob Blecher 1874 No 6 - image 1 of 6

Here is a unique antique Fire bag or Fireman's salvage bag which is made of a very heavy weight woven fabric...Unfortunately, I do not know what the fabric is but it is extremely sturdy! The bag is 56" long and 21" acoss and has a twine drawstring at the top. In years past, around the time of our nation's birth and into the early 20th century, these bags would have hung on a peg inside one's cabin or house and filled with valuables in case of a fire or other emergency. This particular bag belonged to Jacob Blecher and also is stenciled with the date 1874 and the No. 6. The No. 6 could denote the fire company to which one belonged or who would respond. The most unique feature about this bag is the 2 horses above the date. Perhaps the owner was a horseman, had a stable and owned many horses. At any rate, maybe he wanted fireman to know he had horses in the barn that needed to be rescued too. Or, this could have been a bag used for grain, though I doubt anyone could lift it when filled as it is unusually large for a grain bag. This bag is very sturdy and in good overall condition but does have some water marks here and there...I have not cleaned it in any way as I prefer to let that up to the buyer if desired. Such a great piece of Americana!!!
