Here is another wonderful clothing accessory from the Herr estate of Lancaster County, Pa. This antique lady's sun bonnet is 14" long x 10" side to side when lying flat. It is made of a heavy twill type fabric, has a 5" deep brim, buttons to attach crown piece and apron to the brim and 2 sets of ties. There is tatted type lace around the different pieces. The fabric is off-white in color with some expected age marks but overall condition is very nice! I do not know for sure for which occasion this bonnet was worn but could have been a Sunday best or wedding bonnet back in the 1800s. A wonderful addition to a clothing collection! Here is a bit of history: The Herr's lived in a small town in Lancaster Co. and the father was a Doctor, the mother a school teacher and the daughter was a musician and taught music later in life. The daughter Anna Mary was born in 1915 and many of the pieces of clothing, bonnets and other textiles belonged to her. Her mother made it a priority to mark items with slips of paper to identify their origins and thus future generations would benefit. This bonnet belonged to a member of the family prior to Anna Mary's birth...perhaps belonged to her mother or grandmother..
