For someone who cherishes their Christian roots and would like to experience Church as it was back in the 1930s and 40s, I offer this unique diorama. I found this many years ago at a shop on the grounds of Sandy Cove ministries in Maryland and it was the perfect item to take with me when I gave talks in nursing homes as so many of the folks could relate to going to church back before and during WWII. I collected churches back then and though most were made of ceramic or were wooden banks in the shape of a church building, I knew from then on this would be the prize of my collection.
The maker or makers were extremely talented and perhaps this was to be a model for an actual church...the details are amazing! This could also have been made by a talented wood worker and craftsmen as a child's toy. Words can not adequately describe the love that went into the making of this church. First of all, there is a wooden platform with 3 built in elevated levels at the front of the church. The walls are arched and painted, there are simulated stain glass windows on each side, plastic pipes for the organ and 2 signs that read "Jesus Cares" and "Keep Looking Up". To furnish the front of the church, there are 3 wooden arm chairs, an organ with bench, a piano with bench, a baptismal basin, a communion table, and a pulpit. Each of these pieces are meticulously made of wood and stained mahogany. The lower platform is where the 8 wooden oak pews can be situated...each pew has a removable red plastic seat "cushion" and a hymnal rack on the back. Pews are 4 3/4" long. Now, as any good preacher will tell you, a church is not a building but the people of God who attend there. So, the maker of this diorama made the most incredible people to fill the pews. There are 17 people of a variety of shapes and sizes, and 14 of them are handmade from pipe cleaners and have little wooden ball heads with painted features. Some have wonderful knit type hats no bigger than the tip of a finger and clothing that has been hand sewn onto the bodies. Just amazing!! The 3 church leaders are of a different nature...2 are plastic Renwal fellows...the preacher is wearing a made- to -order black tuxedo type outfit and the organist is as he came from the factory. The last fellow is the soloist who may have been added at a later time. Unfortunately, I was unable to show all the minute details of the furniture and the wonderful people but trust me when I say this is a One of a Kind Creation worthy of a place in a prized collection. Every piece can be moved around however you wish!! So much fun!! The entire platform is about 22" long x 16 1/4" wide x 13 1/2" high and weighs about 8 pounds. Shipping cost may need to be adjusted when ready to ship based on box size, packing and weight.
