For the collector, here is a lovely hand painted button that I have always thought was a Satsuma. It is 1 1/2" in diameter, made of ceramic or pottery type material and has been painted with lovely flowers and a gold scalloped edge. I recently learned that Satsuma buttons show crackling in the background but my button does not...hence the hesitation in referring to this as a true Satsuma. However, it has the same type backing (unglazed raised mound with straight hole pierced through) as the older Satsumas and has other similar features. It does have a nick in the back as shown in photos. Estimated age...late 1800s, early 1900s. Neat button for a display or collection!
