For the discerning collector, here is a very lovely and skillfully stitched quilt top. I believe the story told here is that the maker or recipient loved nature. The center rectangle bears the initials G or C A M along with the date of 1893, a lovely flying bird and is surrounded by flowers. There are 50 squares featuring a myriad of creatures including children, mans best friend- the dog, a cat, an owl, a lovely butterfly, an intricately sewn spider's web with spider and a wide variety of birds and flowers. Each 8" square is skillfully stitched or embroidered in turkey red threads. There is a wide border embroidered entirely with a floral vine and very intricate stitching is found between each block where it comes together. I cannot imaging how long it took to make this lovely quilt top. The maker was quite skilled as you can see if you examine closely the stitches so uniform in size and length. The piece is in nice overall condition with only a few minor age spots or yellowed areas due to storage. A gentle soaking should freshen it up if desired. Notice the red feathery stitching between each block...the maker did that to hide where the pieces were sewn together!! It is about 80" x 72" of pure beauty...Truly a work of art worthy of a special collection!
