Attention all bear lovers and others who like a great find and the story behind it. While on a road awhile ago, I came across a cute crocheted head bear and decided to buy him. I liked his look with the bib overalls and crocheted head, body, hat and booties...let's just say I liked everything about him. I was told he came out of an old barn...he showed no bad affects from his stay in the barn (probably was in a trunk for safekeeping) so off I went with this old bear who put a smile on my face. (See photo 3.) When I got out to my car and was about to show him to my sister, I almost dropped him but when I caught him before he hit the ground, I noticed something very special about him...underneath the overalls, a bit of mohair was showing on his leg!! Boy was I excited!! I took off the bibs and saw that only his upper body, head and booties were crocheted and the rest of him was mohair. Of course I figured that underneath the crocheted parts was probably more mohair. I had to wait several days till I got home to take out the stitches that held the crocheting in place (I could hardly wait!!) And of course the person who devised this disguise did a thorough job of it and it seemed to take me forever to unveil his face. I pulled out lots of old nylons used for stuffing and finally I saw why a new face was given this old guy. He had certainly seen better days and somewhere along the way, had lost a lot of stuffing from his face. He must have been much loved for someone to go to all that trouble to reinvent him. I felt that it was time to return him to his glory days so off he went to the doll hospital for some stuffing, new eyes and a nose job. While there, I did some research and found out that he originally was an Electric Eye Bear from the early 1900s, made by an unknown American Company. These bears always had straight legs and round little tummies in addition to Electric bulbs for eyes that would light up. Though he no longer has the original eyes, he is quite a find...I think you will agree! He stands about 21" tall and retains much of his short mohair. I allowed his feet and paws to stay as found...paws are cloth covered in good condition and feet show wear (see photos). He also has an "open wound" behind one ear. I will include his crocheted parts to the lucky buyer. This special bear will be a great addition to any bear collection!! Don't you agree??!! As Paul Harvey would say "and now you have, the rest of the story!" Please wait for my invoice before payment is made so I can adjust shipping for you if necessary...possibly reduced shipping depending on location.
