Arbit Blatas (American; 1908-1999) Portrait of a Young Man, Oil on canvas, ca. 1940’s

Lithuanian-American artist Arbit Blatas left his native country for Paris in 1929. There he studied at several institutions and honed his skills as a School of Paris painter. He first came to New York in 1934. After the Second World War he divided his time between New York and Paris, exhibiting in both cities often.

This portrait presents a seated young man, yet his face is at an angle, giving it an informal and modernist touch. Blatas pays attention to the sitter’s unusual and colorful shirt. Along with his confident pose, the portrait conveys an independent man, possibly one with political or artistic aspirations. On the reverse side of the stretcher is inscribed in pencil the name and address of someone, perhaps the sitter.

The 18” x 21 1/2” oil on canvas is framed with a possibly later chestnut frame with overall dimensions 29” high x 25” wide. Both frame and painting are in very good condition.
