American School - New York State landscape; Oil on Canvas, ca. 1890’s.
This summer landscape is reportedly a location on the upper end of the Susquehanna River in southern New York State near the Pennsylvania line. What is so unusual about it is that it depicts how Victorian Americans spent their summers. The cottage is located on a river bank with a pier for boat access. There are nearby tents set up outside the house that must have been for extra guests or perhaps the children. The painting is very well done, by a very talented artist. Unfortunately it is not signed, but the quality is evident. The composition, lighting and details are indicative of an accomplished artist. A single figure in a blue shirt appears on the bank, near the pier.
The oil on canvas measures 11” x 18” and has no repairs or damage. The wood frame is original and is also in very good condition, with very minor issues commensurate with age. It’s outside measurements are 17 1/2” x 24 1/2”. If you enjoy taking a trip back 125 years and see how fortunate Americans summered in the country, this painting is for you.
