I pleased to offer a beautiful Victorian book chain and locket.
Front of both chain and locket are engraved in fine scrollwork, back of both locket and chain are plain. Most likely dates to the late Victorian era 1890-1901. Chain could be worn with locket in front, as pictured, or on its own clasped in the back.
Oval locket has both picture frames, but no glass. There are no marks of any kind, chain and locket were acid tested.
Ever wondered how the chain get the name book chain? There are numerous explanations, here is one:
In addition to being a beautiful and sometimes sentimental fashion adornment, book chain necklaces surprisingly had another purpose. When women finished reading at night, they removed their book chain from their neck and used it as a bookmark. Perhaps that is where the name “book chain” actually originated!
Condition: excellent all original. No dents, repairs or deep scratches, some fine scratches to the back, as can be expected with age.
Measurements: locket is 1 13/16” by 1 1/2” (bail adds about 1/2”), chain is 18” long by 5/16” wide.
