Primitive, blue-green painted covered cheese box used in a country or general store in the 19th Century. The box is labeled "CHEESE" in 2" hand-lettered white paint and has a double-hinged top raised by a milk glass knob. Years of use has worn the two coats of green paint resulting in a striking patina on all surfaces. A 1 1/2" vent hole is present on the upper left-rear side. Interior is unpainted and shows years of appropriate wear, including scuffing, and patina. There is some separation of bottom boards but box is sound and appropriate given age and usage. Original square nail construction with round head nails used in subsequent repairs. 21"W x 10 3/4"H x 20 3/4"D. An exceptional painted country primitive.
