This is truly a ONE-OF-A-KIND, 19th century quilt inspired by the Centennial in 1889 of the Constitution of the United States and features twin portraits of the Presidents in 1789 and 1889, George Washington and Benjamin Harrison.
The quilt is covered with appliquéd images using stitches too small to count. Quilting, around each appliqué is expertly done in tiny even stitches at 8 to the inch. The handwork is impeccable. The quilt is further enhanced by an elaborate embroidered center medallion of George Washington and his horse.
Binding is scalloped. Backing is a floral print, peonies I believe. Quilt is clean, thin and crisp. There is a hand stitched stripe on the back along the top, for hanging.
The varied images give a multi-faceted view of late 19th century America. There is very early picture of baseball and of a tennis match. City views include San Francisco, New Orleans, Kansas City. Detroit and more. There is the Brooklyn Bridge, Bunker Hill, flags, and other patriotic themes, and a variety of sailing vessels. Every viewing discovers something new.
