Genre painter and sculptor, Robert Wylie was an ex patriot American. He was one of the founding members of the artist's colony in Pont- Aven, France and was one of the first of the many post-Civil War American artists to become fascinated by the subject of peasantry. Many of his paintings depict Breton peasants and historical scenes about the history of Brittany. Peasants were attractive to Americans because they represented a stability, steadfastness and commitment to religion and family that had been lost to many Americans during the Civil War.

Wylie was born on the Isle of Man, England in 1839. As a baby (1839) he was taken to the United States and from 1859 to 1862 he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. He exhibited work in ivory and clay at the Academy, and following the advice of directors there, went to France in 1863 to study. He won a medal of the second class at the Paris Salon of 1872 and exhibited there frequently.

He went to Pont Aven, Brittany in 1864 and remained there until his death on February 4, 1877.

Among his important works was a large canvas, " The Death of a Vendean Chief," now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
