Offered for sale is an oval Deroche á Paris gravy boat with underplate which was made in France in the early 1800’s. Beautifully hand painted on the finest Old Paris porcelain, this gravy boat has an oval shape with an attached snake-form handle. The snake is holding the boat in its mouth, its segmented body is curved to form the handle proper, and the handle ends in a splayed tail which is firmly attached to the body of the gravy boat. The rim of the boat has a wide ribbon of gilt painted above a green enamel chain which, in turn, is above a gilt pendant, berry and quatrefoil border. Below this, on the body of the gravy boat, is another thin gilt ribbon. The boat is mounted to a pedestal base which has a narrow gilt ribbon where it attaches to the body, and there is a wider gilt ribbon at bottom of the base. The matching underplate is decorated with the same wide border, and it has a central narrow gilt ribbon around the oval gravy boat depression. The underside of the boat is very clearly marked “Deroche á Paris” next to a “J” or “T” in an overglaze pale pink/orange, and the underside of the saucer has the remnant of a matching worn mark just visible. Both pieces are in amazingly good condition with no visible chips, repairs or restorations, and with minimal gilt wear due to age and use. This will be a stunning addition to any Old Paris porcelain collection.
