Offered for sale is an elaborate two-section HB Quimper letter holder ca. 1930. The letter holder has a lovely free-form shape with an elaborate series of orange circles highlighting its deep cobalt blue border. The inner surface of its letter sections and its front face are painted a creamy beige. The tallest letter support and the face of the holder are each decorated with a garland of brown branches with green leaves or pine needles along with round blue-bordered flowers with rust-red petals and yellow centers. Both the letter supports and the face of the holder are embellished with the popular “four-dot” decoration in rust-red. The back of the letter holder is painted cobalt blue, and many of the decorative orange circles can be seen along its edges. There is an old Joan Datesman “merrywalk” label still attached to the back of the holder which shows the change in Quimper prices over the past few decades. The undecorated base is glazed, and it has underglaze HB Quimper markings from the early 1930’s. The base shows signs of light wear and there is light crazing, almost un-noticeable, on the creamy beige ground on the face of the letter holder, both to be expected given its age.
