This is a porcelain Japanese Art Deco teapot first offered for sale at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernest held in Paris in 1925. It was originally one of a pair, with its partner being a smaller similar teapot (mother & child?). This charming porcelain elephant has a rider on its back. The elephant has a raised trunk, and its tail is tucked tightly against its body. The inside of his trunk, his tusks, his eyes and a musical horn supporting his handle (used to summon him from afar?) are all gilt highlighted. A rider in a simple green jacket is seated on an elaborately painted and glazed carpet covering its back. The carpet is decorated with raised and painted pink and yellow, and white and yellow, flowers and green leaves on a pale purple ground, and with a green and rust-red border at its lowest edges on each side. The elephant’s body is unglazed, making a pleasant contrast with the carpet on its back. There is an intact handle connected to the teapot front and back with simple metal rings, and the original wrapping on the top of the handle is completely intact. The horn handle supporting the front of the teapot's handle is painted with a splash of brown. The lid also has a steam-hole as the teapot was made for use as well as decoration. There is a partially impressed “Made in Japan” mark on its underside. This elephant is a mate to my inventory # 20011, though the two are of similar size and would not have been sold together in 1925. Each would have had a now-lost smaller companion. This elephant has no chips, no cracks and no restorations.
