Offered for sale is a porcelain oyster plate manufactured by Haviland in Limoges, France some time before 1891 as indicated by the absence of “France” on its base. The plate is beautifully hand decorated with an elaborate fish and seaweed border in gilt over a very deep cobalt blue (almost black!) ground. There are 5 oyster wells on the plate, each outlined with a sponged gilt border. This plate has a very tiny, almost un-noticeable, professional chip repair over the oyster well closest to its border. There is also one tiny area where the cobalt ground has a ribbed mark from use. With these exceptions, the plate is in “as made” condition. Measuring 7 3/4” in diameter, the plate has two maker’s marks: A green underglaze “H & Co. / DEPOSE” indicating that the blank was made by Haviland, and a red overglaze “Haviland & Co. Limoges” inside a double circle indicating that the plate was also hand painted at the Haviland factory in Limoges, France. The border on the rim of this plate is exceptional, as is the plate itself.
