This Antique hinged bangle dates to the Victorian era and is made out of the rare and beautiful material gutta percha. Victorian women often tried to simulate jet jewelry with less expensive materials like bog oak, and gutta percha. Normally gutta percha is blacker (similar to jet), but our bangle is a slightly lighter brown. It's possible that the wood lightened slightly due to sunlight exposure. This bangle has two yellow gold bands inlaid into the gutta percha. It is unmarked. The clasp locks shut, but the hinge is wobbly. You would have to replace the hinge to secure the bracelet safely. The gold safety chain is still attached and is in good condition. The gutta percha has a few scratches and one white scuff mark on the outside, but these flaws are expected for its age. We have not tried to clean it at all. The bangle is small, measuring approximately 2.5" long and 2" wide and 3/4" thick. It weighs 19.5 grams.
