This stoneware canning jar has a dark brown, high gloss glaze and is marked on the bottom Peoria Pottery. It is in good condition overall though there is a small chip at the bottom and a couple small chips in the side. An earlier owner colored the chips in the side to match the glaze. Also this jar has some manufacturing flaws and lines/scratches in the glaze. The Peoria Pottery Company opened in 1864. They were quite successful producing utilitarian ware for 38 years until going out of business in 1902. In the 1870's they began to produce molded wares with a distinctive dark Albany-like slipped glaze that often attained a high sheen and a dark pumpkin color.
This was known as the "Peoria Glaze." This canning jar having the peoria glaze dates to between 1870 and 1902. It would look great holding flowers or used to hold utensils in the kitchen.
