This blue and white stoneware crock has the word salt on the front and 4 swastikas on a textured background around the circumference. There are circles of smaller swastikas above and below the center section. The crock is made to hang on a wall. I see no chips or cracks but there is a brown spot on the top edge above the letter L in salt. The swastika or symbols that look the same have been used by many cultures throughout history. The 'tsil no'oli' a swastika shaped symbol was used by the Navajo in sacred healing rituals. To the Hopi a similar shape represented the wandering Hopi clans. Swastika symbols are found in many other cultures/religions such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian and southern European. Throughout its history, the swastika has represented life, sun, power, strength and good luck.
By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well-known symbol and had many different names, depending on the country. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being.” It appears to have first been used in Neolithic Eurasia. In the beginning of the 20th century the swastika was widely used in Europe were the most common meaning was good luck and well being. During World War I, it was found on shoulder patches of members of the American 45th Division and the Finnish air force.
