Jacques-Hubert Bonnefoy – Autumn Landscape – 1938
Bright Provence landscape in autumn with vineyards and bare trees.
Jacques-Hubert Bonnefoy, French painter, draughtsman and illustrator, was born on August 30, 1887 in Mesnil-Aubrey (Seine-et-Oise). Soon after his birth, the family moved to Paris, where his father became a teacher of drawing in different schools and from whom he learned his first lessons. Later, he studied at the famous Julian Academy, studying with painters Jean-Paul Laurens and Gabriel Ferrier.
Married to Marcelle Yvonne Le Morvau in 1922, he worked for Barré-Dayez for many years. His thematic illustrations of regional customs and landscapes of France become famous, usually signed Jack Hubert Bonnefoy or JHBonnefoy. A slightly visible handwritten annotation on the frame indicates that this work was painted on May 4, 1938.
Bonnefoy died in Paris on August 20, 1976 at the age of 88 years.
