Jean-Baptiste Tilliard – Father Chappe – Circa 1770

Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (Paris, 1740-1813) was a French engraver and painter of historical scenes. He was a pupil of Étienne Fessard (1714-1774), engraver to the king. After his studies, he combined engraving with working as an archivist of the Société des Arts Graphiques and as a publisher. He took part in the exhibition at the Colisée in Paris in 1797. A skilful engraver of the works of artists such as Charles Monnet, Jean-Baptiste Le Prince and Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubain, he worked mainly for bookshops and also engraved vignettes.

This original line engraving after Jean-Martial Frédou dates to approximately 1770. Entitled “L’Abbé Chappe”, it represents a portrait of Father Jean Chappe d’Auteroche (1728-1769), a celebrity in his own right, well-travelled from Siberia to California, a man of the cloth and an astronomer. His observations on the transits of Venus have helped to solve the problem of the size of the solar system. A moon crater is named after him.
