Offered is a very scarce 1674 Quaker book by William Penn (1644-1718) and George Whitehead (1636-1723), "The Christian-Quaker, and his Divine Testimony Vindicated..." in two parts. Printed in London by Andrew Soule. Part 1 has 160 pp with no page 57-58 as issued. Also pp 161/162 & errata leaf are missing. Part 1 is dated 1674. Part 2 also has irregular pagination with pages 1 to 334 correctly numbered, but followed by 135 to 176, numbered in error,. Lastly Part II is mistakenly dated 1673, instead of the correct 1674.
The title page of Part I has an owner's inscription: "Job Lousley's Book, Hampstead Norris Berkshire, 1810" and "An exceedingly scarce and valuable book, and much admired by the Quakers. Both parts compleat. Worth 1-1-7. I never saw but this copy." (Price) 16-0.
Folio sized (10 1/4 x 7 inches). Rebound in the 19th century in marbled boards. Repairs to the title page of Part 1 by William Penn, with its reverse partially rebacked, and quite a few pages have minor wrinkling. A few pages throughout the text are partially rebacked for strengthening. The overall condition of the book is good plus, with solid front and back joints. This is a very readble copy of a very hard to locate Quaker book. We could find no other copies for sale on the internet.
