Unger Brothers Art Nouveau Sterling Match Safe Vesta box, c 1900
Wonderfully detailed Art Nouveau Vesta Box (match safe) depicting a frolicking nude woman amidst the waves, arms spread as if the waves are cradling her. In the waves she is surrounded by swirls of repoussé silver adding to her Art Nouveau charm. There is minor wear and dents to be expected with age; the original vermeil finish on the interior is still intact. There may have been a small sterling loop on the side (I have seen one this way before) but it is now gone. The hinge is working and closes properly. We used a gentle silver cloth to bring out the highlights. The back is monogrammed with what look like the letters “ NPW” in cursive. The hallmarks are as follows: “STERLING FINE 925” and the mark for Unger Brothers.
