Once in every twenty years or so you got lucky and come across a truly rare cameo. This one is one of them. The cameo dates to George III era c.1800-1820, it is masterfully carved in Malachite and set in an extraordinary high carat gold frame executed in an Etruscan Revival manner. The subject was a bit difficult to define, but one lovely lady prompted that it is "Peace Halting the Horses of Mars". It is taken from a painting by B. Gagneraux.
I was taken by an artistic carving of this piece, the way Malachite strata were used to express the brutality and bloodlust of war, fear, physical valor and sheer speed of the horses running through the battlefield. All this is shown on a piece of stone of a size just a couple of inches! The quality of the carving is outstanding, Malachite is probably the most difficult material to work with because of its extremely fragile nature, one wrong move and the whole piece will burst into pieces. Please also note an absolutely beautiful gold wirework on a setting, it is done in a very distinctive Etruscan Revival style not only by a design but more importantly by an actual technique. During the beginning of 1800, an archeological excavation of Rome began and the world discovered Etruscan culture and their fantastic gold jewelry. The Etruscan style took Europe and Britain by surprise, their technique was unique, not known to an "educated" old world and simply superb. This fact helped me to establish a very accurate time frame when this little work of art was created: between 1800 and 1820. The setting is done in a high-carat gold that tests between modern 14ct and 18ct, if you just take a look at it and see how bright the gold you immediately realize that.
The cameo is in superb condition for a piece of over 200 years old, please note that one horse over the duration of two millennia lost a tip of its head, I made a close-up shot of it, rather than that the cameo is in great shape, all lines you see are not cracks they are strata borders and do not go deep or through the body of malachite. The price is firm, the small damage was taken under consideration thus the price is much lower than it should be for a such rare and beautiful piece. Please consider layaway if interested. I have more photos, do contact me if interested. The pin is slightly bent as it was worked for a comfortable position, it does not affect the security of the "C" lock.
