Spencer Venables (English, active 1876-79), an 1877 oil on mahogany panel, titled "The Love Letter" that depicts a lovely young woman reading a letter in a relaxed posture. She wears highly embroidered silk robes. She is so absorbed in her reading that she ignores her adoring pug dog, who is waiting for her attention. Artist's signature to the lower left, dated on the label verso. Though I don't typically purchase English paintings, I was drawn to the details of this pretty painting, which bears painstaking details and a beautifully rendered picture of a vanished age. Sight: 9.5" H x 8". Framed: 15" H x 12.75" W.
CONDITION: As inspected under UV light by the auction company from which I purchased the painting: minor degree of inpainting (notable to lower right), moderate degree of original varnish fluoresces, minor accretions, moderate edge wear to frame. The painting appears to be in excellent condition, and the frame bears minor rubs and scratches.
