Eva Martino (American/PA, b. 1929) oil on canvas painting titled, "Interior" (1954) depicts a cozy living room scene with a dog napping on the floor, and the lights just lighted during an evening. Both warm and realistic, the dog napping on the floor adds to the tranquil atmosphere. I love the touch of the painting over the sofa and painting in the dining room--both Eva and her husband were professional artists. Lovely painting for your own living room. Signed "Eva M". Solid wood and gilt frame. Sight: 20" W x 24" H. Framed: 22" W x 26" H.
Provenance: Deaccession in benefit of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Student Scholarship Program.
Artist Bio: Eva Marinelli Martino was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 15, 1929. She studied at Yellow Springs of the PA Academy of the Fine Arts. Eva married Giovanni Martino, who was her most important inspiration and mentor.
She works in oils. Her early works during the fifties were of still lives and interiors featuring her family. She expanded her repertoire to inanimate or found objects from around her home. Martino then began portraying life-sized figures and is now working on a "Chicken House" series for which she is most known.
Her style is modern with an eye to classical paintings of the past. Her work has a strong lyrical sense and warm earthy colors, with a true sense in her compositions, of the hard ships women have gone through, throughout the ages and even today the hardships they endure in the 21st century as domesticated beings. She uses a combination of references to design her works - models, imagination, and sketches she made in the 1950's in chicken houses in West Philadelphia and Norristown.
Eva has two daughters, Nina Florence and Babette. When they were children, she set up still lives for her daughters, and she taught them the basis of drawing and color. They are both artists. She maintains a studio at her residence in Blue Bell, PA that she shares with her youngest daughter, Babette.
She has received numerous awards & honors. Currently, she is the main impetus along with her husband's body of work in "Homage to the Martino Family", an exhibition of the four painters at: "El Nigromante" the principle gallery of the National Institute of the Fine Arts in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.
