This beautiful wide hip belt was impossible to pass up and the work on it has my total admiration. I imagine it was made for the tourist trade back in the 70's.
It is 32.25" long with 2, .25" wide and 9.5" long black Cotton Cords on both sides ending in double Cowrie Shells, except on the other side where one of the two cords has only one Cowrie Shell. It is 4" wide at the center and curves from 2.75" down to 2.25" and back to 3.75" at the closing ends.
The beading is Turquoise, Wood and cuts of Mother of Pearl, the largest being the center at 2.25" wide and the diamond cuts at 1.75" across and the ending rounds of Mother of Pearl come in at approximately 1.5" across. The black cloth backing is attached by hand stitches.
It is gorgeous and very Wearable Art. It has some missing beads and slight wear but considering the piece and the love I am sure it had, I would say it is in very good condition.
