1900s Straits Chinese earrings set with natural rubies and diamonds in 20k gold.
The antique rubies are old cut and vivid in color, while the hand cut diamonds are primitively cut and serve as accents.
This is a pair of full length chandelier earrings, at 7cm long.
The older pairs were always built in dainty proportions, since Straits Chinese chandelier earrings are desired for their literally 'flighty' (lightweight) beauty.
This Victorian hanging basket motif is itself inspired by the Italian Giardinetti.
While these Giardinetti pieces are featured in books, we very rarely get to them now. The flower basket is definitely more Western and 'full flavour' than the oft repeated motifs observed in everyday Straits jewellery.
This is only our second Giardinetti piece. The first was a brooch.
This pair is Straits Chinese Victorian, very specifically, and hence a collectible work.
A craftsmanship detail to point out is this: it is hard to construct these chandelier pieces where they wear well as ear ornaments. These chandelier earrings do not flip or turn over. Less sophisticated pairs will. This of course reflects the expertise, specifically, the balance in weight, behind each pair.
While many chandelier earrings were made throughout the 1900s, from as early as the mid 19th century, these 'full flavour' pairs are very delightful when they appear, surpassing modern day reproduced pieces easily.
Lightweight yet ornate, only the old hands could deliver this art.
