Mid century diamond pendant set with 0.82ctw diamonds in 18k white gold.
These cinematic ‘starlet’ pendants, of a white gold body, are what we cannot get enough of in this region.
They are reminiscent of the mid century starlet staring out in her celluloid career, as opposed to those seen on a ‘bigger’ actress, more youthful in flavour and less gaudy/studded.
These types of pendants tend to make use of a few big diamonds and a smattering of smaller diamonds to give off bling, but they were all made in white gold to appear subdued and Westernised, then.
Nevertheless, they are very hard to locate as many have been melted down, since the white gold in these jewellery tended to lose their rhodium plating. Once old, goldsmiths and jewellers tend to want to melt them for their weight in gold (and diamonds!).
This is Chinese Art Nouveau not commonly expressed, since in this region everything tended to be viewed as diamond-studded or “the rest”.
These mid-sized pendants are striking because they fit with the modern imagination of soft beauty, wearing with a short or very much longer chain, each style working its distinct look.
The diamonds are excellent. But what’s intriguing is how much attention is given to the top almost three quarters of the pendant, the ribbon-and-leaf part with the little diamonds! It is in the way space is used that makes a semi-ornate piece graceful.
The pendant measures 3.8cm by 2.0cm.
Marked 18k on the bail.
The platinum chain is sold separately.
