1900s Straits Chinese diamond pendant set with 5ctw diamonds in 20k yellow gold.
This is a magnificent find, an antique diamond made up of diamonds that are all not small. Many cluster pendants cannot be said to be built this way.
The berry or grape cluster has diamonds of at least 0.15ct each, with slightly smaller diamonds on the ‘branch’.
Diamonds are of excellent quality.
This earlier make of Straits Chinese jewellery is telling from how the body of diamonds drapes like fabric.
Its technique is implemented by the clever use of nails at very specific points in the pendant. These few but potent nails in the outermost (diamond) cups hold the cluster together in a way that allows the whole to drape and seemingly fold.
Wearing a pendant this big, almost 5cm tall, feels sophisticated and not gaudy, but really all from its great form.
The diamonds inevitably appear bigger and whiter, because your eyes cannot really make out the prong work, another mark of early craftsmanship.
The Victorian influence of lavaliere pendants can be seen here. In fact, this is the biggest pendant we’ve had with such a big piece of swing drop, over 4 carats of diamonds, cloistered in a 3.5cm tall space!
If not done so well, this pendant will avert the gaze (from being so studded).
Now it only means an antiquity we cannot easily mimic, and the gaze knows in a heartbeat.
The pendant is unmarked, but acid tests as 20k gold.
The chain necklace is sold separately.
