A stunning modernist sterling silver tobacco / jewellery box Mexico ca. early 1950's.
This wonderfully contemporary design is sterling silver through out. The hinged lid opens smoothly to 90 degrees to reveal three internal compartments which are lined in cedar wood. Very clean and crisp modern lines and extremely tactile.
Marked: TAG (or ARG) STERLING inside a HECHO EN MEXICO PLATA 925 triangle. No Eagle assay or registration numbers date this box to the late 1940's or early 1950's.
It is offered in excellent condition throughout; a lovely original patina with just a few surface scuffs and a little tarnish, commensurate with age and use. The lid closes firmly and opens smoothly. The cedar lining has a feint staining to it in places but overall is clean and sound. It's a lovely thing.
Measures: 9 1/2 inches long x 6 1/2 inches deep x just over 1 1/2 inches high.
