A quite amazing Mexican Grand Gala Charro coat and vest in heavy deerskin suede with tooled leather trims and panels depicting vines, flowers and leaves. Bought in Mexico early 1950's - ca. 1952

Four pocket coat, shawl collar style. Overall, in very good vintage condition; a small surface cut in the suede on right hand shoulder, an area lower left which looks stained and rubbed a little. A couple of areas grazed and a small pull and repair to back shoulder seam. Wonderfully detailed tooled leather roses, leaves, vines and other floral decoration all present, nothing missing as far as I can see. One or two very small areas have lost a stitch and become slightly loose all of which looks minor.

The fantastic buttons are detailed owl faces with glass eyes. Of the six main buttons, two owls have lost an eye each, but four are still complete. The cuffs also have three pairs of owl buttons each and similarly there are losses to some of the glass eyes. They have no marks on them and although I have not tested them, I suspect these buttons are a bronzed metal with perhaps a low silver content.

Three inner pockets, lined in bronze coloured fabric, which I think is a kind of cotton, rayon mix. The sleeves are fully lined also in a striped fabric, again the cotton / rayon mix. The lining is is good condition overall, but there are a few places where the stitching on the seams have come loose, particually under the arms. The lining in the arms looks well stained, I'm not sure if that could clean out.

The label inside reads: AV AGUSTIN VARGAS / SASTRE / MEXICO,D.F.

The vest or waistcoat is in very good condition; the trims and panels are tooled leather and of the finest quality. They are mainly intact but in one or two small areas have come detached. There is nothing missing and looks to be simple to repair if you so desired. One or two minor areas of rubbing on the suede only. Five pairs of small owl buttons all present, some glass eyes missing. A striped cotton interior lining and a cotton / rayon mix outside with adjustable buckle. There's one small rip in the shoulder approximately 1 inch long and another approximately 0.5 inch.

Both pieces are cut neatly and would fit a slim 38" chest. The back seam of the coat is 25" long. Inside seam of arm approximately 18" Both items combined weigh just under 4 lbs.
