This is such a lovely ring set with precious stones. I think it is circa 1840, which is one of my favorite periods in jewelry, because the gold work (Cannetille work) is so pretty. I'm sure this ring was meant to be 18 carat, but there is no mark, and as always , these rings test, with a modern digital tester, 14 carat gold The ring contains 4 natural pearls, 3 emeralds (one larger center one, and two smaller on the side, and 4 rubies. This ring was most likely given to a friend or loved one, because my favorite thing about this ring is the glass bezel on the back. These rings often had this, as a place to put a locket of hair of a loved one, but most often the cavity is there, but the glass and contents are gone. This is a sentimental ring; not a mourning one, and the glass bezel is there with what I believe to be the tightly woven material that was often placed in the back of these rings, and then, if one wished, a lock of hair of a beloved could be placed there instead of the material. This is an especially nice feature about this ring, because I, personally, would never remove the hair that is still inside a ring, but I don't believe this is hair in the back of this ring. I have looked at it with a loupe, and it looks like the tightly woven material I have seen on the backs of other similar items. So, if one wanted, they could take this ring to a jeweler, especially one who is used to working with antiques, and the material could be removed, and a small piece of hair of the new owner's beloved could be placed there instead. That would be a lot of trouble, but it is doable. This ring is a size 6 and 1/2 to 6 and 3/4, but could be resized by someone used to working with antique jewelry. The ring weighs 2.86 grams. It is in excellent condition. What a beauty.
