I have had several nice comet brooches over the years. The people of the Regency period were excited about the appearance of Haley's Comet in 1835, and they commemorated it in several ways, including the creation of pieces of jewelry formed in the shape of the comet. I have had them with precious stones, including diamonds, but on my recent 2019 trip to the UK, I found a a few of these brooches utilizing hair work. They all came from the same collection, and I had never before seen them with hair work. This one is fashioned from 18 carat (unmarked but tested) yellow gold, and the locket is filled with flowers formed from human hair. This one measures 1 inch long and 1/2 inch wide, and weighs 2.1 grams. It is in excellent, original condition, save for a few dents on the back which most likely came from pressing the soft gold too hard when attaching it to clothing. This does not diminish its value. The small dents are only noticeable on the back of the brooch,
