This is a lovely, wide (6.8 mm wide),hand engraved buckle ring. It is circa 1880-1890. For those of you who may not know, the buckle was a very popular motif in Victorian times. After much searching, I finally found what seems to be a logical explanation for the buckle. J Bell says, in one of her Jewelry books, that Queen Victoria , who was the head of the Royal Order of the Garter, was too modest to wear her garter on her leg, so she wore it on her arm, and her subjects followed suit. This is a particularly nice buckle ring because of the width and the engraving. It is a size 7 and 1/2, but it can be sized by someone who is used to working with antique jewelry. The ring weighs 2.5 grams, and it is in excellent condition. It is unmarked, but tested, 14 carat yellow gold.
