This is one of the most ornate book boxes I have seen. I'm not certain of the type of wood, but it is quite dark and smooth. The box has mother of pearl fittings in the front and back, along with a Mother of Pearl Insert. I actually think the back is more beautiful than the front. It is heavily carved, as a lovely leather bound book would have been. This one measures 4 inches North to South, 3 inches East to West, and 1 inch deep. The front slides down to reveal a cavity for storing treasures, but the opening is concealed. What a great addition to a collection this would be, and what a great place to store money, or that special treasure.
