What a beautiful, elegant piece of late Victorian paste is this locket. It's easy to understand the popularity of paste jewels among the emerging middle and business classes. The pieces were created by jewelers, and the same skill and craft was used that was used with priceless pieces. Often paste has more shine and glow than precious stones, because of course, precious stones come out of the ground and have flaws. This lovely locket was created from silver (sterling) and 9 carat yellow gold, and then lovely gold, pink, and pearl paste stones were added. It measures 1 ad 1/4 inches North to South, and 1 inch East to West, not counting the bale. The locket has a tight clasp, and the back opens to a nice sized cavity which is the perfect place to put the photo of a loved one, or a lock of hair , or both. This piece is in excellent condition, Austro Hungarian, and circa 1890. It weighs 16.11 grams.
